What is Healthy Weight Healthy Joints?

The Healthy Weight Health Joints program at Medical City Lewisville is a patient-centered, team-focused approach to help patients become more successful with joint replacement surgery. Our team consists of medical weight specialists, dietitians, physical therapists and surgeons who can help patients reach and sustain a healthy body weight, treat joint pain, and achieve lifestyle goals.

Many orthopedic surgeons require a patient to have a body mass index (BMI) less than 40 prior to total joint replacement surgery, although a BMI less than 35 is preferred. Medical City Lewisville offers two specialized pathways for patients who are seeking help on their weight loss journey.

The multidisciplinary team of experts at Medical City Lewisville's Bariatric & Metabolic Institute are experienced in helping patients develop individualized plans to achieve their weight loss goals and improve their overall health.

Two pathways for successful weight loss

Medical weight loss pathway

In the medical weight loss for joint replacement program, patients achieve weight loss and health goals through:

  • Medical weight counseling
  • Personalized and evidence-based nutrition guidance from a registered dietitian
  • Individualized weight loss and therapeutic exercise plan
  • Physical therapy
  • Medication therapy
  • Lifestyle modifications

Patients begin with a consultation with the Bariatric & Metabolic Institute team for weight counseling and to develop an individualized weight loss and therapeutic exercise plan. Our program’s registered dietitian provides nutritional counseling, and works with the patient to develop a personalized meal plan.

The medical weight loss program’s goal is for patients to achieve successful weight loss and qualify for joint replacement surgery within three to six months.

Surgical weight loss pathway

The surgical weight loss for joint replacement program helps patients achieve weight loss using the team approach in the medical weight loss program, and includes weight loss surgery for patients who qualify.

The surgical weight loss program’s goal is for patients to achieve successful weight loss and qualify for joint replacement surgery within six to 12 months.
